Gillian Wang Piano Studio Policy

Last Updated: August 2024

Lessons

  • Piano Lessons are provided one-on-one only, in a weekly 30/45/60 minute lessons unless otherwise discussed with the teacher. Online lessons are not offered unless arranged with the teacher (e.g. in the case of mock exam).

Student Expectation

  • At-Home practice is an essential element of success in piano. Students are given tasks to complete over the week, written in their notebook or discussed verbally and are expected to make continuous progress over the week.

  • Students and parents must wait outside before their lesson time. Students are asked not to ring the doorbell ahead of their lesson time as it may disrupt a previous student's lesson.

  • Students are required to bring a pencil, their notebook for lesson notes, and the relevant books for their level to each class.

  • Students are asked to keep their nails trimmed short for proper hand posture and finger technique.

Materials

  • Students are expected to have appropriate instruments at home to practice. Student must have access to a keyboard or piano with full 88 keys and a functioning damper pedal. An acoustic piano is necessary for students who plan on participating in RCM examinations or competitions. However, it is recommended to all students for proper technical and musical development.

Absences

  • Cancellations or rescheduling of lessons must be made at a minimum of 24 hours in advance. Cancellations of lessons within 24 hours will not be made-up or rescheduled.

  • In case of sickness or other emergencies please notify the teacher as soon as possible in order to make alternative arrangements.

    • * If the student is unwell, please do not come to class and consider switching to online class. The teacher reserves the right to send a student home if they arrive to class ill.

    • If a student (or family member) has tested positive for COVID-19 or any other contagious illness, please make arrangements with the teacher and do not come to lessons in person.

  • In case of inclement weather (at the teacher’s discretion), students may switch to online lessons or lessons may be rescheduled.

  • If a student arrives late to a lesson, the lesson will still end at regular time to account for the next student's lesson.

  • If a student misses a class without notifying the teacher ahead of time, the class is considered forfeited and will be charged as an ordinary lesson.

  • Credit will be applied to the following month for any lesson the teacher cancels or reschedules after tuition is paid.
